How to Transfer YouTube Channel Ownership (2026 Step-by-Step)

Updated 2026-08-15

Short answer

You transfer a YouTube channel by putting it on a Brand Account and then handing over the primary owner role. Google puts a wait on that step, and it runs on two clocks. The new person must have been an owner or manager for 7 days or more. The person making the change must have been an owner for 7 days or more too. Videos, views and subscribers move with the channel. AdSense does not. The new owner has to link their own AdSense for YouTube account, and that link can only be changed once every 32 days. A brand new AdSense account usually takes several days to approve.

What does transferring a YouTube channel really mean?

It means moving control of the channel to a different Google Account, and there is only one clean way to do it. The channel has to sit on a Brand Account, because that is the only container Google built to change hands.

A personal channel is welded to one Google Account and has no handover button anywhere in the settings. So the first move in every transfer is the same. You get the channel onto a Brand Account, even if the buyer never asked for one.

A Brand Account is a shared layer that sits over the channel. Google Account Help says you and others "can jointly manage a Brand Account through your own Google Accounts", and that an account "can have multiple owners and managers". One of those people is the primary owner, and that role is the thing you actually hand over.

The wording matters here. Giving somebody Manager access is not a transfer, it is just access. Google says Managers "can use Google services that support Brand Accounts", such as posting videos on YouTube. Owners "can take the most actions, and they control who manages the account". There is also a Communications manager role, which can do the same as a Manager but cannot use YouTube.

So a real handover is three jobs rather than one:

- Get the channel onto a Brand Account.

- Move the primary owner role to the new person.

- Relink the money to the new owner's own AdSense account.

Job two is the obvious one. Jobs one and three are the jobs with waits attached, so build your timeline around all three.

How do you transfer a channel that is already on a Brand Account?

You invite the new owner into the Brand Account, wait out the 7-day rules, then move the primary owner role to them. All of it happens in the Brand Accounts area of your Google Account. It is not in YouTube Studio, which is why the button is so hard to find.

Here is the order Google's help page lays out:

- Open the Brand Accounts section of your Google Account.

- Pick the Brand Account that holds the channel.

- Click Manage permissions to see who has access today.

- Click Invite new users, add the new person's email address, and set their role to Owner.

- Have them open the email and accept the invite.

- Wait. Google requires that "the person becoming the new primary owner has been a manager or owner for 7 days or more" and that "the person making the change has been an owner for 7 days or more".

- Once both waits are up, click the down arrow next to their name, choose Primary owner, then click Transfer.

- Take yourself off the account last, after the transfer has gone through.

That second rule is easy to miss. If you built the Brand Account this week to hold a personal channel, your own 7 days start this week too. Check both dates before you promise a handover date.

Removing people has a matching gate on it. Google Account Help says you have to be an owner of the account for 7 days before you can remove managers or owners. A new owner cannot walk in and strip everyone else out on day one. Deleting or restoring the whole Brand Account carries the same 7-day condition.

There is one more clock worth knowing. If you use the newer channel permissions system inside YouTube Studio instead, YouTube says that once an invite is sent, it expires after 30 days. Send it, then chase it, because an expired invite quietly resets the whole sequence.

What if the channel is a personal channel?

Then you move it to a Brand Account first, using YouTube's built-in tool under Advanced settings. Google does not publish how long that move takes. It does publish conditions, and one screen inside it can wipe out a second channel.

The help page lists what has to be true before the move will work:

- Your Google Account is the primary account owner of the channel.

- The channel is opted out of channel permissions in YouTube Studio.

- Any other users with channel permissions have been removed first.

- The account is not a supervised account.

There are not many steps. Sign in to YouTube, click your profile picture, and switch to the Google Account that holds the channel. Open Settings, then Advanced settings, and choose the option to move the channel to your Google Account or to a different brand account. Pick the destination, check how the channel name will show afterwards, then click Move channel and re-enter your password if you are asked.

The destination screen is the dangerous one. If the account you are moving into already has a channel on it, YouTube asks you to click Replace. Google's warning says that any content on the replaced channel "will be permanently deleted, including videos, comments, messages, playlists, and history". That channel's verification badge is lost as well. Read that screen twice before you confirm anything.

A few things never make the trip either. Google's page says watch and search history, creator demographic information, and gift settings do not move with the channel, so the new owner starts clean on all three.

How long does a YouTube channel transfer take?

The ownership step takes at least 7 days, and two clocks run, not one. The new owner needs 7 days as an owner or manager. The seller needs 7 days as an owner. So if the seller only just built the Brand Account, 7 days is the floor, not the answer.

The AdSense step runs alongside that one. It can add anything from a few minutes to several weeks.

The best case is a buyer who already has an approved AdSense account in their own name. Ownership clears on day seven, the link takes a few minutes, and YouTube says the association can take up to 24 hours to show in its systems.

The worst case is a buyer creating AdSense from scratch. YouTube says that usually takes several days for approval, and can sometimes take 2-3 weeks. If PIN address verification is required, YouTube says linking may take 2-4 weeks. Google does not say whether those two waits stack or overlap, so plan around the longer one.

These waits are built into the products, and Google's help pages do not describe a way to speed any of them up. Here is every clock in one place.

Why is the AdSense link the hard part?

Because AdSense never changes hands, no matter what the deal says. The channel gets unlinked from the seller's AdSense and linked to the new owner's own AdSense for YouTube account instead.

YouTube Help is blunt about why sharing is not an option. You can only have one AdSense or AdSense for YouTube account under the same payee name. YouTube says duplicate accounts "will not be approved and monetization will be turned off for the associated YouTube channel". So borrowing a seller's login is not a shortcut. It is a way to lose the channel's ads.

How long the relink takes depends on what the new owner already has:

- Linking to an AdSense account they already own takes a few minutes.

- Creating a new AdSense for YouTube account usually takes several days, and can sometimes take 2-3 weeks.

- If PIN address verification is required, YouTube says linking may take 2-4 weeks.

- After linking, YouTube says its systems can take up to 24 hours to show the association.

Where the new owner lives changes this step. Google sets AdSense payment thresholds per currency rather than as one global figure, and YouTube says "the YouTube and AdSense payments accounts have separate payment threshold amounts". PIN address verification is not always required either. And AdSense is not open everywhere. Google names Crimea, Cuba, the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics, Iran and North Korea as places where publishers cannot use it. A buyer there cannot open the account this step depends on.

Then there is the lock on that link. You can only change your linked AdSense for YouTube account once every 32 days. Point the channel at the wrong account and you wait more than a month to fix it. So do this step slowly, once, with the right email in front of you.

We walk through the whole sequence in our YouTube AdSense setup and transfer guide.

Does monetization survive a change of owner?

Yes. Partner Program standing sits with the channel, not with the person holding the password. Ads only stop while no approved AdSense account is linked to it.

YouTube calls that state paused monetization. Its help page says the pause happens when "there isn't an active and approved AdSense for YouTube account linked to your channel". Two details sit on that same page. Paused monetization "doesn't violate our channel accountability policy as it is not considered an abuse event under this policy". And there is no back pay: the channel "will not earn money from the duration it has been paused".

Two deadlines matter if the gap drags on longer than it should:

- YouTube says a paused channel has 120 days to resume. After 120 days it loses access to memberships, and it loses its members.

- YouTube says it can remove monetization from a channel that goes quiet. Its wording is 6 months or more with no uploads and no posts.

So do not park the channel while the paperwork clears. Keep posting through the handover. An empty upload schedule is the one risk here you fully control.

Money already earned by the old owner stays in the old owner's AdSense account, and new earnings land in the new one. YouTube says finalized monthly earnings reach the payments account between the 7th and 12th of the following month. Payment follows by the 21st or 26th if the balance meets the payment threshold and there are no payment holds. The threshold amount depends on your currency. There is more on the mechanics in does monetization transfer with a YouTube channel and the YouTube payment threshold.

What goes wrong most often?

Five mistakes are worth guarding against, and you can dodge all five by slowing down and reading the screens. None of them are technical problems. They are rushing problems.

- Clicking Replace on a destination account that already has a channel. That deletes the channel already there.

- Trying to promote the new owner before both 7-day waits have run out.

- Linking the wrong AdSense account and then running into the 32-day lock.

- Creating a second AdSense account under a payee name that already has one. That gets monetization turned off.

- Letting the channel go quiet for months while the swap drags on.

One more thing is worth saying plainly. YouTube's Terms of Service do not name channel sales, one way or the other. The one "non-assignable" line in them covers YouTube's own software, not your channel. What the terms do give YouTube is room to act: it "reserves the right to suspend or terminate your Google account or your access to all or part of the Service". So the platform does not bless a sale, and it does not protect one either. What the law says where you live is a separate question, and not one this page can answer. Read is buying a YouTube channel legal and is buying a YouTube channel safe before you send anyone money.

If you are on the buying side, the clean version of all this is short. Get the channel handed to you inside a Brand Account, sit through the 7-day waits, link your own AdSense once and carefully, then start uploading. If you would rather skip the hunt for a seller, our monetized YouTube channels are a fixed $499 with the handover built in.
